Why I Speak

Why I Speak

People ask me why I stand up at city council meetings. Why I talk to people others walk past. Why I make art about people most of the city pretends aren't there.

The answer is simple

I was almost one of them.

Growing up in Downtown LA, I saw how fast a life can unravel. One bad break, one missed rent, one illness — and you're on the sidewalk. I watched neighbors disappear. Not die. Just... vanish into the margins where the city stops looking.

"Silence is not neutral. When you see someone suffering and say nothing, your silence becomes part of the suffering."

So I speak. At council meetings, on street corners, through my art. Not because I have all the answers. But because someone has to say out loud what everyone already knows: these are human beings, not problems.

Every necklace I make, every painting, every speech — it all comes back to the same thing. Giving voice to the voiceless. Giving dignity back to people the city took it from.

What you can do

You don't have to be an artist or an activist. You just have to see people. Look them in the eye. Say hello. Treat them like what they are — your neighbors.

That's where humanity starts.
